Wash Park Pediatric Dentistry is redefining the dental experience for little ones across Denver. Led by the compassionate and experienced Dr. Patrick, this neighborhood practice offers expert, kid-focused care in a calming environment. They proudly provide personalized support for children with special needs, creating a sensory-friendly experience that meets each child exactly where they are. Their team is dedicated to inclusivity which is something we truly value.
Wash Park Pediatric Dentistry is known for being an inclusive and welcoming space—what does inclusivity mean to you personally and professionally?
Creating a welcoming space begins with being fully present and meeting each patient exactly where they are. We ask ourselves, “What does this patient need today, and how can I show up for them?” It’s about truly seeing the person in front of us and responding with care and intention.
Inclusivity, on a broader level, is a mindset. It means always operating with a spirit of welcome, making thoughtful decisions that consider perspectives beyond our own. From the beginning of an appointment to the very end, we intentionally think through how to make each step inclusive. We value feedback—even when it’s difficult—because it’s a gift that helps us improve. At our practice, we guide our team to prioritize in this order: patient, practice, team, and then self. This helps ensure that patient needs always come first.
How do you and your team create a safe, affirming environment for children of all backgrounds, abilities, and identities?
We believe parents are the true experts on their children, so we regularly ask them what we can do better. Their insights are invaluable. We also make a conscious effort to hire team members from a wide range of backgrounds and identities, because we know that diverse perspectives strengthen our care.
Our team is constantly encouraged to center the patient experience. It’s not about us—it’s about creating a space where each child feels seen, safe, and celebrated. When we do that, patients are able to shine.
What inspired you to focus your practice specifically on pediatric dentistry, and how has that evolved over the years?
Dr. Patrick and his wife, Heidi, who own and operate the practice, met in a seminar about caring for kids with disabilities. That meeting sparked the initial idea for what Wash Park Pediatric Dentistry would become. From the very beginning, there was a vision for creating a space that would honor each child’s unique needs—and seeing that vision brought to life over the years has been incredibly meaningful. It’s been amazing to witness the impact on the community.
Can you share a story that highlights how your inclusive approach has positively impacted a child or family?
In 2020, we met a patient who was very anxious during her first visit. We quickly realized that a desensitization plan would be key to building her trust and comfort. Over the past five years, we’ve learned exactly what helps her feel confident and safe. For example, her cleanings are done in 10-second intervals, we use the “tell, show, do” method, and we always have specific equipment on hand that makes her most comfortable. Every patient is different, and their needs evolve over time. It takes patience, creativity, and often trial and error, but the result is worth it: a child who feels empowered and safe in our care.
How do you support children who may have dental anxiety, sensory sensitivities, or special healthcare needs during their visits?
For every patient, we celebrate baby steps—every small improvement is a win. We take time to desensitize children to the space and equipment, and we often invite them to visit ahead of their appointment just to look around or pick out a prize. This builds trust in us and confidence in themselves.
We never force a child to do anything they’re uncomfortable with, and we certainly never shame them. Each child is different, and we honor their timing. Sometimes, a simple “Great job today” can go a long way in reinforcing their confidence and sense of safety.
What advice do you have for parents who want to build healthy, positive dental habits early in their child’s life?
When we meet new patients, we always talk about the difference between what’s “ideal” and what real life at home might look like. Perfection is never the goal. Instead, we focus on giving parents the education, tools, and support they need to guide their kids at home. Brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste is the gold standard—but if you miss here and there, it’s okay. Each day is a new opportunity, and we encourage parents and kids to be gentle with themselves.
In what ways do you stay engaged with the broader Denver community to promote oral health and inclusive care?
Dr. Patrick stays busy providing care, but we’re fortunate to have an amazing outreach team that helps us stay connected. We often send team members to local schools and care centers, and we’re proud to sponsor a number of school programs that might otherwise go unfunded.
We also collaborate with many local providers—occupational therapists, pediatricians, speech-language pathologists, orthodontists, ABA therapists, and more. Our relationships with fellow care providers help us deliver more holistic support for our patients.
Heidi represents our office on the South Pearl Street Board and is also active in healthcare management organizations. Through these roles, she brings new ideas, strategies, and inspiration from healthcare leaders across the country back to our practice.
Looking ahead, how do you hope to continue growing Wash Park Pediatric Dentistry’s mission and impact?
We were thrilled to celebrate our 5-year anniversary in February 2025! When we first opened, we had just one assistant and three dental chairs. Today, we’ve expanded both our team and our physical space. We’ve also welcomed a part-time female associate dentist, Dr. Waguespack, to the practice.
Our community impact begins with the families we serve, but it also extends to our role as a local employer. We’re proud to offer training and mentorship, and we’ve built an all-female team that continues to grow into something truly special.
As we look to the future, we’re focused on deepening our reach and continuing to connect with families who are looking for the kind of inclusive, thoughtful care we provide. We’re committed to learning, evolving, and staying nimble so we can always meet the needs of our neighbors.
Dr. Patrick is passionate about staying up-to-date through courses, seminars, and continuing education. Heidi, meanwhile, sets a personal goal of reading 26 books a year—mostly non-fiction—and she draws from a wide range of topics outside of dentistry to bring fresh insights into our practice. Her certifications also require ongoing education, which ensures a steady stream of new ideas.
We love being part of the vibrant South Pearl Street community and feel so fortunate to call it home.
