After breaking the mysterious “One Wish Willow” to win his crush’s heart, a hopeless romantic finds himself getting exactly what he asked for but soon discovers that some desires come at a dark, sinister price. Taking an icky conceit and twisting it to deviously crowd-pleasing ends, Obsession is dauntingly disturbing while also skillfully amusing and thrilling. It’s a fruitful slow panic that swells at a constant rate from grounded in reality, and multiplied over and over until “wrecked beyond belief” status is achieved. It’s steady, tight, and brutal, but nowhere near a slow burn. This is one of those movies that will stick with you for a long time, teaching lessons that we all really need to be careful what we wish for.
