Directed and written by Sam Mendes, he travels to the troubled early 1980s in England, to tell a humble little tale of human connection. His new film, Empire of Light, is the director’s most delicate, a wistful short story about two people seized by circumstance who help one another find their way through life. It’s an achingly lovely film—the best Mendes has yet made. Hilary (Olivia Colman) is a cinema manager struggling with her mental health, and Stephen (Micheal Ward) is a new employee longing to escape the provincial town where he faces daily adversity. Together they find a sense of belonging and experience the healing power of music, cinema, and community.
