Every four years we experience a Leap Year, when we are gifted with an extra day. You know, the extra day you find yourself wishing for when life gets overwhelming? That’s the one. Knowing we have an extra 24 hours this month, sets a tone full of promise. How will you spend it? Will it give you an opportunity to get caught up? Is it a chance to take a rest and reset? Don’t over-think it, there are plenty of reasons to celebrate this month and we have some ideas.

Random Acts of Kindness Day coincides with President’s Day this year. This is a social media holiday we can stand behind, as kindness promotes empathy and compassion, which ultimately leads to a feeling of connectedness. Something we all could use a heavy dose of these days.

Later this month you can check out the music of Kyle Emerson February 21st at the Hi Dive. Learn more about his music and life between LA and Denver in our center spread. Plus it’s been said that people who see live music live longer, a rumor we’re willing to take to heart.

For you fellow film buffs out there, we suggest spending the 29th catching up on all of the films nominated for the Oscars this year. By the time you read this, the winners will have already been announced. But regardless of who takes home the gold statue, there are so many amazing movies to see. So, if you haven’t made it your job to see all of the nominated films, like some people, cough, then take the opportunity of an extra 24 hours and get caught up. There truly isn’t a film nominated that we didn’t thoroughly enjoy. But if we can make a small suggestion, it’s probably not a good idea to watch A Marriage Story with that special someone on the 14th. It was definitely one of our favorite films of the year, but it’s doesn’t necessarily set the tone for romance.

Either way we hope you make the most of your 29 days. Thank you for reading local . . . until next month.

Your neighbors,

Sam and Shaleen DeStefano
