In 1927, cinema changed forever with the invention of Movietone, the synchronization of sound and pictures on the big screen. It’s no wonder that this was the year that major theatres across the nation first opened, including our beloved Esquire theatre. Fast forward nearly 70 years later, when we first fell in love with the independent art house theatre. We saw two of our favorite films, Basquiat, and Stealing Beauty in the historic two-screener. The Esquire is a fixture in the community, with the longest running monthly Rocky Horror Picture Show screenings that includes a live shadow cast.

This theatre has remained dedicated to independent cinema and the preservation of culture and art for nearly 100 years and is now potentially going to be redeveloped. The Esquire is such an important part of Denver’s rich history and is at risk of being erased. And for what? Another soulless retail/residential hybrid.

The Esquire serves as a meaningful link to our past and ensures that future generations find a love for real film. In the age of AI, it is essential that we hold on to places like this that underline the importance of, and connect us to, independent art. If you share our love for historical preservation, culture and film, please consider helping. The best way to do so right now, is to continue to see movies at the Esquire. They are very much still open and need our support now more than ever. Additionally, there is a petition being circulated at bit.ly/41MHNuu. It’s amazing what can happen when community comes together. As we move into the new year it is important that we don’t lose site of our past. Wishing you a bright 2024!
