Morgan Harper Nichols, artist and poet asks “What did July teach you? What are you hoping to learn this month? How can you practice learning how to rest and just be this August?”

We love this, because it really prompts you to take an honest look at your accomplishments and also, the moments that may have been less than colorful. For us, August can sometimes lead to a bit of an anxious feeling. As in, did you fill your summer with all the things on your bucket list? Did we take full advantage of the long unscheduled days? So here we are, closing out summer with a bang, by featuring two of our favorite things, ice cream and live music! As fans of the Underground Music Festival for the last two decades, it seems only fitting to help them ring in their 21st year in person, since their twentieth was celebrated online. Take a peek at past UMS moments and let the excitement build for Aug. 28 + 29th. With over 100 bands, there is sure to be something for everyone.

Next we meet the owners of Sweet Action ice cream. Our neighbors on Old South Gaylord Street have mastered the art of this dessert that has been enjoyed in the US since the 18th century. Now that they’re within walking distance, we allow ourselves to come up with excuses to enjoy this treat more often than not. Their use of inventive real ingredients takes away all guilt and even makes you feel like you’re doing something good for yourself. And you are.

Happy end of summer to you!

Your neighbors,

Sam and Shaleen DeStefano
