If you’ve ever felt like your financial advisor speaks a different language, one full of jargon and fine print, LotusGroup Advisors might just be the breath of fresh air you didn’t know you were looking for. Tucked right here on South Gaylord Street, this Denver-based firm has been quietly doing things differently since founder Raphael Martorello opened its doors in 2004 with a straightforward philosophy: Make Life Count. For LotusGroup, that means less time stressing over spreadsheets and more time actually living. Whether that’s a long-postponed adventure, a business you’ve always dreamed of building, or simply knowing your family is taken care of. Their tight-knit team of advisors gets to know you as a person first, and a portfolio second. And in a neighborhood like Washington Park, where community still means something, that kind of approach feels right at home.
A lot of people feel intimidated by wealth management or assume they need to have “a lot” of money before talking to an advisor. What would you say to someone who’s been putting it off because they don’t feel financially confident yet?
Working with a financial advisor is designed to provide benefits no matter the amount of investable assets a person has. The most important reason being that a financial advisor can help turn scattered decisions or indecisiveness into a structured, long-term plan.
At LotusGroup Advisors, we work with people who have $500,000+ in investable assets. No matter who we have the opportunity to work with, we are focused on making them feel comfortable, empowered and cared for. Caring for others is actually one of LotusGroup’s core values. We want our clients to feel confident about the options they have and the choices they make.
In a world where so much feels automated and transactional, how does LotusGroup keep the relationship side of financial planning personal and human?
There is nothing more important to us than the relationship we have with our clients. Because we are a small, boutique firm, we make an investment in truly getting to know YOU – your values, goals, family, biggest influences and stresses. Our objective is to build a true long-term partnership with warmth and personalized attention. Our advanced, behind-the-scenes technology provides our portfolio managers with critical data while giving our clients secure, on-demand access to their account information. That being said, the primary interactions are intentionally human and person-to-person.
Money is deeply emotional for many people, tied to stress, family, identity, even guilt. How do you create an environment where clients feel safe having those conversations openly?
That is very true, and a lot of people don’t realize that these factors can influence their financial views and decisions as much as they do. When we begin working with a new client, we dedicate time to listening, learning, and understanding each unique situation. We ask questions and share stories (without sharing names, of course) of how we have guided other clients in similar situations. This helps people feel that they are not alone and that others share the same financial questions and struggles. We are a “judgment free” zone, and our goal is to strive to leave them in a better place than where we started when we meet. The key is to build trust so our clients feel comfortable and cared for.
What are some of the experiences people have had working with other wealth management firms, and how is your approach different?
We hear from clients who have been with the large financial advisory firms that they felt the experience was impersonal and they were treated like a number instead of a person. They also experienced a turnover of advisors.
Our approach as a boutique firm is warm, caring and personalized to each client’s unique situation. Our strategies are customized to their financial behavior and the amount of risk they’re comfortable taking. We believe developing a strategy tailored for the long-term is a highly effective approach to help our clients meet their goals. We take the time to make sure our clients understand the various components of their plan, so they have clarity and confidence in their financial decision making. We also communicate regularly, not just about their portfolios, but about things that are relevant to their life, hobbies, age, and values.
Your team seems to genuinely prioritize care and connection. How does that philosophy shape the way you guide clients through major life moments, whether exciting or difficult?
The only reason our clients share those life moments with us is because they trust us. Our clients are like family so, no matter the circumstance, we always have their best interest at heart.
We are their biggest cheerleaders, and we are also there to support them through some of the most difficult times like divorce, illness, and the death of a loved one. Because money plays such an integral role in people’s lives, it only makes sense that the relationship with their financial advisor should be close, caring and supportive. We hold ourselves to extremely high standards of professionalism, and we make a commitment of excellence to our clients. One of those commitments is that we prioritize being accessible and responsive to our clients.
Financial goals often evolve alongside life itself. How do you help clients balance planning responsibly for the future while still enjoying their lives in the present?
Goals often shift, and it’s exciting for us to be part of that. The most important aspect of adjusting goals successfully, as it relates to a client’s financial plan, is communication. Our overarching mission is to help our clients achieve financial security through thoughtful planning and wealth management and then use that money to Make Life Count. Time is a limited commodity, so we encourage our clients to enjoy their wealth by pursuing passions and adventures. It thrills us not for our clients to accumulate millions of dollars, but to be able to spend it on something especially meaningful to them. Our goal is to manage the financial details while you live your best life.
As a local firm rooted in community, why is it important for you to build long-term relationships here in Denver rather than take a more corporate, one-size-fits-all approach?
While we have many clients all over the country, the vast majority are right here in Colorado. It’s important to us that we are ingrained in the community that many LotusGroup employees work and live in. Working with Denver clients allows for that face-to-face interaction that is so important to us. There is a comfort in knowing that people who play an important role in your life are close by if you need them…just like family.
A corporate, one-size fits all approach does not make sense to us. Each individual’s circumstances are different; their values, goals, risk tolerance, levels of financial understanding. We are committed to truly understanding our clients which enables us to meet them where they are. We don’t try to fit them into a mold. That doesn’t make sense for them or for us.
When clients leave a meeting with Lotus Group, how do you hope they feel, not just financially, but personally?
We hope they feel confident, educated and in control…confident that we are guiding them with a structured plan designed to navigate volatile markets, and encouraged by the clarity they’ve gained. We also want them to have a clear direction on what we will do and what they are responsible for to help them achieve their goals. We hope they feel connected, understood, and excited to Make Life Count.
What can we expect from you in the future?
We are constantly brainstorming ideas for educational events at our office that will be of interest to our clients, prospective clients and the Wash Park community. In February, we hosted an event for people who have all types of collections from art to wine to designer clothing. Our most recent event was part of our Women Wealth & Wine Series focusing on women in the sandwich generation. Stay tuned for more to come.
